Veterans Affairs hospitals and clinics in Western Washington are in danger of losing their accreditation after inspectors discovered an immediate threat to life in the health care system in May, according to the group that inspects the nation hospitals.
The finding came during a routine inspection of Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System facilities at the American Lake VA Hospital in Tacoma, the VA Medical Center in Seattle and the VA outpatient clinic in Bremerton.
The Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations, a Chicago-based group that polices the quality of care in the nation 5,000-plus hospitals, inspected the facilities May 14-17.
On any given day, an average of 42 patients including veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder after duty in Iraq are treated at each of the mental health units at the American Lake and Seattle hospitals, Rowe said. They stay for an average of six to 14 days, she said.
