Drop-side cribs have generated millions of dollars in revenue for different companies, and while they tend to offer convenience by way of ease of placement and removal of an infant, they have also unfortunately encountered problems by way of dangers and defects. Now comes word that one of the largest manufacturers of these drop-side cribs, Stork Craft Manufacturers of Canada, has initiated what’s believed to be the largest recall of cribs in the history of the United States. The dangers are so severe that many people need the help of a Washington drop-side crib recall lawyer. Below is a brief overview of the issue.
Problems with Drop-Side Cribs
The problems associated with these defective cribs concern the side of the unit that drops. Basically, this dropping side can either detach completely or move outward slightly, each of which presents significant dangers to anyone who comes into contact with them. If the dropping side detaches, the infant can fall out from the inside or the parent can fall into the crib from the outside while holding the child. Hundreds of injuries of this regard have been reported.
However, the greater danger appears to be the second problem, which is the tendency for these drop-side cribs to allow for the creation of a small space between the side of the mattress and the dropping side when pressure is exerted on it from the inside. This space is large enough for an infant to roll into it while sleeping and become trapped, which in turn can lead to suffocation. Four infants have suffered that tragic fate in the United States.
Models Affected in the Crib Recall
According to a statement released by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the models affected were sold between January of 1993 and October of 2009, and they also affect the Stork Craft cribs sold with the Fisher-Price logo. They were sold at retail outlets that include BJ’s Wholesale Club, J.C. Penney, Kmart, Meijer, Sears, USA Baby and Wal-Mart. The models have also been available online at Amazon.com, Babiesrus.com, Costco.com, Target.com and Walmart.com. In all, more than 2 million units have been recalled, and the CPSC has advised parents to stop using these cribs immediately.
