Joaquin Rodriguez, 20, of Nooksak, WA pulled his Nissan 240SX out of a parking lot to go east on Everson Goshen Road in Everson, WA, yesterday around 8:30 am. Apparently he did this without adequately looking, because he proceeded to plow into a 1998 Dodge Ram driven by Glenn Laird, 51, of Bellingham, as he drove his truck in the westbound lane.
Rodriguez was driven by ambulance to St. Joseph Hospital, where he was stabilized and transferred to another hospital. No other information was available because of patient privacy restrictions.
Laird was treated and released at the scene.
The driver’s speed and alcohol caused the crash, troopers suspect. Charges were pending.
As odd as a DUI wreck is at 8:30 am, the driver perhaps misjudged the speed of the oncoming vehicle or felt that his little Nissan had the pick-me-up needed to avoid a auto accident. Regardless, neither judgment was correct. Most likely the alcohol aided in that lack of judgment. Luckily, no one was hurt, except for the DUI driver. He will be living with his decision for a long time.
