A man in his 50s, and his passenger, a woman in her 40s, were driving at a high speed near SW 120th St. and Ambaum Blvd. SW at approximately 8:20 pm last night. The speeding vehicle crashed into a jersey barrier, flew though the air for 100 feet. clipped a nearby tree whose branches tore off the hood, and landed on a short hill.
When emergency crews arrived smoke was still rising from the car. Both the man and the woman were conscious and alert. The man was able to exit the car, but the woman had to be cut out of the wreckage.
Both were taken to an area hospital with serious personal injuries. Their exact conditions were not known today.
Their identities have not yet been revealed.
The cause of the crash has not been determined, but deputies said alcohol and excessive speed may have been a factor. Charges have not yet been filed.
Needless to say, these two are lucky to be alive. It was probably their seatbelts and airbags that saved them. These implements of safety are generally meant to accompany defensive driving and good judgment, not compensate for them. The driver put the passenger’s life in danger and now he may have to face those charges. Please don’t speed.
