A small plane identified as a Cessna 206, that took off from Merrill Field in Anchorage, Alaska, was apparently headed for the Northwest, when witnesses say that it suddenly lost control, clipped the roof of a motel, and crashed in front of an unoccupied former car lot office, sparking a fire shortly after 5 pm yesterday.
One witness said he was riding his bicycle when he heard the plane above him. The aircraft started to wobble before disappearing beyond the motel and making a thudding sound.
When the crash happened people driving by immediately stopped their cars, jumped out, and helped the passengers inside of the plane. All of the passengers in the plane crash were severely injured, one unconscious woman was reported to have lost most of her teeth and her mouth was filling with blood, luckily she was saved before she suffocated.
During the bold rescue the plane burst into flames, but the bystanders kept on pulling people from the plane. The fire inspired a couple of people to start putting out the flames with fire extinguishers since fire crews had not arrived yet. Witnesses said that helpers then started yelling, “You’re spraying on the baby.”
The brave helpers got everyone out, two adults, a 16 year old girl, a 2 year-old boy, and the deceased 4 year-old boy. The pilot and his wife were the adults, owners of a local resort, the two children were their sons, and the 16 year-old girl was an employee of theirs.
The single-engine plane was registered to the pilot and Julian Inc., a guide and outfitting business based in Port Alsworth, Alaska.
Our condolences go out to the couple that lost their child in this unfortunate accident.
Small planes, when not properly maintained, can suffer severe mechanical problems that can lead to a seriously dangerous situation, not only for the pilot and passengers, but also people on the ground. When a pilot leases a plane they should have a reasonable expectation that the plane has had the proper care and that it will not endanger the lives of the pilot or passengers.
