The incidence of drivers crossing the center-line into oncoming traffic is all too common in Washington state car accidents. These have proven to cause some of the worst accidents as both vehicles hit each other at full speed. Safety measures such as seat belts and airbags can save a driver’s life, but sometimes its not enough as was the case this morning in Pierce County.
The head-on collision happened around 2:30 a.m. at Stewart Road and Thornton Avenue, near the entrance to Highway 167 when the driver of a large, gray Ford F-350 truck drifted across the center-line at Stewart Road, colliding head-on with a white Toyota Echo driven by a 24-year-old Pierce County man.
Washington State Patrol officers said that there was extensive damage to both vehicles as the truck sheared open the roof of the small economy car, invariably dealing more damage to the driver.
Medical crews arrived quickly to the scene, but declared the driver of the Echo dead.
The driver of the pick-up was hurt and transported to Harborview Medical Center with serious personal injuries and is now in what police call “medical custody.” Troopers say that he could face vehicular homicide charges when he’s released from the hospital.
It was a soggy night last night, but troopers say it wasn’t raining at the time of the crash. They’re investigating to see if speed or alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
Our condolences go out to the friends and family of the deceased young man.
Vehicular homicide is usually charged when a driver is suspected of reckless driving such as speeding or driving under the influence (DUI). It is a felony and carries all the weight of a serious crime when the suspect is convicted, which means prison time, loss of voting rights, and the serious social consequences when they leave prison. Please be responsible behind the wheel.
