Minor and Deadly Weekend Accidents

Car Accident, Deputy Killed, Fatal Accident, Four Car Accident, Grant County, Minor Accident

January 21st, 2010: Washington Legal

Over the weekend a Grant County Sheriff’s deputy was killed in a car accident near Quincy Sunday night while this week an East Wenatchee woman was in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with a head injury suffered in a four-car accident Thursday.

The latter happened at 4:50 p.m. Thursday when a Chevrolet Monte Carlo crossed the centerline of Highway 97A about two miles south of Entiat and struck head-on a northbound Mini Cooper. Upon impact both cars impacted additional victims one being a Honda Accord, the driver reportedly not injured, the other being a Toyota Prius, the driver of which was reportedly sent to Harborview.

This weekend Grant County Emergency Services reported a deputy on routine patrol involved in a deadly one-car accident.

The Washington State Patrol was also at the scene at State Highway 283 and Road No. NW conducting an investigation.

The scene is about 10 miles southeast of Quincy, and 12 miles south of Ephrata.

These two examples demonstrate the extent of car accidents which can range from deadly to minor. Four car accidents to one car accidents are all common and prove the need for cautious and careful driving.

Cautionary Steps to Avoid Car Collisions in Washington

Downtown Seattle—A nasty accident occurred on 20th and Main that has left one or more people injured, both of whom were transported to Harborview for treatment of unspecified injuries.
A collision that seems to have involved three vehicles were involved, including a DirecTV van, resulted in a child in a car-seat being ejected.
Too often car accidents—which are already a headache (no pun intended)—become more serious when small but significant actions are avoided. In this case the child’s car seat, which was improperly placed in the car resulted in serious injuries. While there is no way of knowing whether the accident would have caused serious injuries anyway, the possibilities when proper action is taken greatly reduces the chances of greater problems.

Such actions that can help drivers in car accidents include:

1. Wearing seatbelts.
2. Well-maintained vehicle.
3. Avoiding distractions (i.e. cell phones, radio, etc.)

A few small steps can help reduce the injuries inherent in an auto collision.

Bellingham Man Dies in Car Crash, Alcohol Suspected

The death of 25-year-old Bellingham man who was killed early Saturday, Dec. 12, when his car drove off the North Cascades Highway into a gully and hit a power pole, reinforces the importance of seatbelts.

The accident victim died when his 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser crossed over the centerline heading eastbound and left the highway near Challenger Road, just west of the town of Concrete. The crash occurred about 4:40 a.m.

The driver was ejected from his vehicle and alcohol is suspected as having contributed to the accident.

The deadly combination of drinking and driving while not wearing seatbelts has lead to several deadly crashes as of late. State troopers who have seen an increase in roadside collision with police vehicles have initiated programs to crackdown on impaired driving. Drunk driving, which can lead to reckless driving habits and hazardous speeds, puts both the driver and others in danger. Seatbelt usage can reduce the injuries associated with a car accident and often are the decisive factor between life and death.

Car Accident in Orting Kills Driver

Highway 162 was closed for about six hours Sunday morning at the 136th Street East Bridge near Orting after a single-car crash that killed a 49-year-old man.

Driving a 1993 Ford Escort, the man was taken from the scene by ambulance and later died at Tacoma General Hospital.

According to the Patrol report, the Ford Escort was traveling eastbound on Highway 162 when the driver struck the bridge. The car came to rest in the middle of the roadway. The accident happened at milepost 6 two miles west of Orting at 3:13 a.m. this morning.

The collision had caused undetermined damage to the bridge and the roadway was closed until DOT personnel could inspect it.

Washington state is littered with rivers and lakes. As a result bridges of all sizes and styles have been constructed over the 150+ year history of the state. Narrow lanes and icy conditions often make bridge driving more hazardous. Cool breezes of wind off of rivers and lakes can reduce road surface temperatures five degrees or more often leading to ice when surrounding temperatures may be above freezing. With a strong winter system approaching, drivers should take care and beware of dangerous bridges while traveling during the winter.

While it is unknown whether alcohol or drugs played a role in this crash, it serves as a reminder that bridges can lead to serious and deadly accidents.
