Hit and Run Accident of a Whole Town

City of FifeFife – If you live in Fife and your power was out this weekend then you and the contents of your refrigerator have been a victim of a hit and run accident.

Police confirmed that the power outage that left hundreds of Fife residents without power was caused by a car ramming into a single power pole. The car hit it with such force that it broke the pole, severing power lines.

The crash occurred about 2 a.m. in the 6100 block of Pacific Highway East on Saturday.

When police arrived at the scene the driver had fled. Their escape was probably aided by the cloak of darkness that had covered the small town.

The investigation is still underway. If you have any information please contact Fife police.

Though this has not been deemed an act of terrorism, cutting the power to a whole town is serious business. Of course, Fife should rethink its power grid if one reckless driver can affect so many.

If you or a loved one retain property damage caused by a careless or drunk driver it is important that you find out your legal rights. Call Phillips Webster for a consultation.

Serious Injuries In Hit-and-Run Accident

1800 block of 356th in Fed Way - Phillips WebsterFederal Way – Two pedestrians were run over on the 1800 block of Southwest 356th Street in Federal Way shortly before 7pm last night.

The most seriously injured victim, a young man in his late teens, was airlifted by helicopter to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, Federal Way Police spokesman Raymond Bunk said. The other victim, a 50-year-old man, was transported by ambulance to Harborview with non-life-threatening injuries.

A young man suspected to be the driver was taken into custody. He had suffered minor injuries, Bunk said. He was believed to be in his late teens or early 20s. His identity was not disclosed.

Investigating officers were initially unsure if alcohol or drugs were factors in the accident, which generally means that alcohol and/or drugs were involved.

Our thoughts are with the victims in this hit-and-run accident. It is always fortunate when a person survives getting hit with a one ton vehicle going at a high speed. It makes for a long hard recovery involving physical therapy and time away from work, which can result in loss of income.

If you or a loved one are injured in a pedestrian or hit-and-run accident it is best to acquire legal council immediately. Call Phillips Webster for a consultation on your legal options.

Hit and Run Suspect Turns Himself In

Kitsap hit and runSouth Kitsap – The owner of an Auto Body Shop came to work last week to discovered a car had run into his shop and then taken off leaving an estimated $3000 worth of damage.

Police investigators at the scene found some parts left over from the wreck and were able to determine that the culprit was driving a Mazda 3 Sport Sedan. They had no evidence or suspects after that.

Friday the mystery was solved when an 18 year old man walked into the Kitsap Sheriff’s Department, confessed to the crime, and turned himself in. A family member had seen the article in the Kitsap Sun and had prompted the young man to do the right thing. The man also offered to pay for the damages he caused to the shop.

The young suspect went on to say that he had mental health issues. At the time of the crash had decided to take his hands off of the wheel and “floor it”. This sent him speeding into the shop. He said that he was knocked unconscious. When he came to he simply pulled out and drove the car home.

Deputies say that he is getting help for his mental health issues. He has not yet been charged for the crime and has not been arrested.

Hit-and-Run Crash Kills Man on Scooter

As the economy continues to struggle and the price of fuel becomes more expensive for many for several reasons, people are beginning to look into alternative forms of transportation that tend to cut costs. One of those choices many people are making involves the use of motor scooters, which are small, motorized vehicles that can generally reach speeds of up to 40 mph but that burn very little gas. It’s not uncommon for these vehicles to have a fuel efficiency of up to 50 miles per gallon.

However, the downside of motor scooters is that they can be dangerous, as they leave the driver completely exposed to danger, especially when they’re involved in collisions with larger vehicles. Tragically, this reality was reinforced with a hit-and-run accident last week that killed a man in Puyallup. According to the Seattle Times:

“Lt. Scott Engle of the Puyallup Police Department said the driver of the car was traveling north in the 2800 block of Ninth Street Southwest when the vehicle crossed the center line and rammed the Vespa scooter just after 7 p.m. The man, an unincorporated Pierce County resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not released.

Engle said the driver of the car fled from the scene. Witnesses followed him and called police. The driver, whose identity was not disclosed, was caught about five miles away from the scene of the crash, Puyallup police said.”

Fortunately, the driver was apprehended. If you or someone you love has been harmed in any sort of hit-and-run accident, you need to contact the auto accident lawyers at Phillips & Webster as soon as possible to schedule a free initial consultation.

Another Fatal Hit-and-Run… Was it a Bus This Time?

July 25th, 2009: Washington Law Blogger

Hit-and-run accidents are a serious problem for many reasons. First and foremost, people are injured and killed as a result of them, otherwise there would be little motivation for the driver of the offending vehicle to flee the scene. Secondly, it’s difficult to ascertain what really happened when the driver of the vehicle is unavailable for a statement. However, it seems quite rare that a bus could hit and kill a pedestrian without any witness accounts, but that could be what occurred early yesterday morning in Seattle.

According to an update entry provided by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer:

“The vehicle that hit and killed a man early Friday on a downtown Seattle street was a bus, possibly a tour bus, according to police.

Police traffic investigators, who blocked off the area around the accident for several hours, said the bus was light colored with a dark stripe or dark tinted windows.

About 12:20 a.m., it was traveling south on Sixth Avenue, then turned east onto Cherry Street. Police believe the bus hit the victim, a man, as he was crossing the street on the northeast corner of Sixth Avenue and Cherry Street.

It appears the man in his 50s was crossing with the light, and the bus didn’t stop, police said.”

The man’s body was discovered later in the street, and police are asking anyone with information to contact them as soon as possible. If you or someone you love has been injured or worse by a hit-and-run, you may need the help of auto accident lawyers as well as the police. Child Seriously Injured in DUI Accident

When someone makes the bad decision to drive after drinking, everyone is put at risk. This includes the driver, any passengers, and vehicles that happen to be on the road at that time, any pedestrians and bikers and apparently, nearby homeowners. What’s worse is when the passenger in the car being driven is a child who is not wearing a seat belt. Sadly, that appears to be the case with a recent DUI crash that also damaged a home.

According to KVBC:

An eight-year-old boy is in critical condition following a DUI accident on Sunday near Michael Way and Smoke Ranch. Police say the man behind the wheel was the boyfriend of the child’s mother. Police say it started as a hit-and-run when the driver slammed into a parked car. He then left the scene, hit a light pole, and crashed through a brick wall into the side of a home.

Metro says the eight-year-old boy was not wearing a seat belt and was bouncing around inside the vehicle. Sadly, we’re being told he may not survive his injuries.”

It’s obvious that the suspect will face a serious problem in terms of criminal prosecution. He could also face substantial civil liability exposure both for injuring the child and for inflicting extensive damage on the home he hit during this episode. Unfortunately, this sort of situation is not rare in the Seattle area, and even those in their homes are not always safe from drunk drivers.

Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Accident Leaves One Dead, One Seriously Injured

June 29th, 2009: Washington Law Blogger

Pedestrians all encounter some level of danger when they cross almost any road, and that’s particularly true when they do so at 3 a.m. Accidents between vehicles and pedestrians can occur at any time, but particularly when conditions are dark and others are out on the road not expecting to come across those on foot. While few details have been revealed in one particular case, what has been reported is that such an accident early on Friday in Spokane.

According to KREM TV:

“The 19-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man were hit by 19-year-old Alex C. Walker as they were walking in the road near the 14200 block of East Rockwell in Spokane Valley. Walker fled the scene, leaving the victims lying in the roadway, but turned himself into Spokane Valley Police about 45 minutes later.

He was charged with vehicular assault and hit and run injury accident, but those charges will likely be changed to include vehicular homicide.”

The survivor of the crash remains hospitalized with two broken legs, but officials have described his condition as satisfactory. What is yet to be ascertained is whether alcohol or any other substance was involved, but even if that isn’t the case, the driver of the vehicle will soon face serious criminal charges against him.

In addition to those problems, the driver could also face substantial civil liability depending on the particular facts of the accident. Even if the driver was not at fault, leaving the scene as he did likely exposes him to this sort of liability. If you or someone you love has been injured in this sort of accident, contact the auto accident lawyers at the Seattle law firm of Phillips & Webster immediately to schedule a free initial consultation.

Hit-and-Run Leaves Seattle Woman Fighting for Her Life

May 8th, 2009: Washington Law Blogger

Seattle authorities are asking for help from anyone who may have information regarding a hit-and-run accident that left an area woman seriously injured and in critical condition. Sarah Kearney is the victim of the crash, and she is listed in critical condition. She is breathing on her own and responding to commands, but is still in danger with serious head injuries.

According to KOMO News in Seattle:

“Kearney was driving home Tuesday night on Highway 18 when a truck crashed into her near the Kent Kangley Road exit near Kent.

The collision shattered the windshield of Kearney’s Mustang, ripped out the driver-side door and left Kearney with severe head injuries.

Investigators said the truck driver then fled, leaving Kearney for dead.

Alongside the victim’s car, troopers found two auto parts they believe belong to the truck driver’s car — a left taillight assembly and a post possibly belonging to a flat-bed truck.”

Investigators are continuing to search for leads regarding the identity of the other driver. If and/or when he or she is identified and apprehended, serious criminal charges are likely to be filed, and the defendant would face prosecution for crimes that would carry a term in prison if convicted.

Aside from the serious criminal nature of the situation involved, the driver would also face substantial civil liability if he or she is ever caught. Hit-and-run accidents that result in these sorts of injuries are often solved, and if you or someoneo you love has been the victim of a hit-and-run, you need to assert your civil rights as well.
